Woodlands Management

The woodland is managed under agreement with the Forestry Authority that has resulted in the establishment of coppice woodland areas, areas for natural regeneration and the restoration of woodland ponds for wildlife.

In all of the estate’s felling operations, some old trees are retained in order to provide for natural regeneration and age diversity in the plantation. The woodland provides about 50% of the woodchips required for the woodchip boiler that supplies all the domestic hot water and the space heating requirements for the estate's tenants.  Furthermore, all stakes and heathers for the hedge laying that takes place on the estate are provided from the hazel coppices on the estate.
